Report on energy trends in the manufacturing sector published

A report analysing the trends related to energy in the local manufacturing sector has been launched. This report commissioned by the Energy and Water Agency, aims at understanding the tendencies that industries have when it comes to energy patterns in their plants. Through a series of in-depth interviews with tens of local SMEs and non-SMEs, this report aims at understanding the struggles and challenges that they face in their operations.

The document, entitled ‘Energy trends within Malta’s manufacturing sector’ was launched during a business breakfast organised by the Energy and Water Agency in collaboration with the Malta Business Bureau who was responsible for conducting the industry interviews for the report. During this event, a panel discussion with the participation of The Malta Chamber, Malta Enterprise and the Malta Chamber of SMEs reviewed the report and the conclusions whilst thinking about the way forward.

Malta Chamber of SMEs CEO, Abigail Mamo identified a number of struggles that are particularly faced by SMEs and not necessarily by larger companies. These include challenges in environmental issues, CSR initiatives and human resources management among others, with difficulty in focusing on these areas with a smaller workforce. Mamo also spoke against a one size-fits all approach particularly in relation to SMEs, particularly when considering than 93% of Malta’s businesses employ less than 10 employees, classifying them as micro businesses.

Newly appointed CEO for The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Edward Chetcuti talked about the importance of working with the business to create a strong economy, but at the same time finding a balance with sustainability and quality of life. Chetcuti also mentioned financial considerations as a constant big driver in business and how SMEs and non-SMEs differ in their approach towards it.

During the panel discussion Karl Herrera, Chief Officer at Malta Enterprise listed the number of schemes and measures taken by the entity in order to support local business. Apart from the general schemes, Herrera highlighted the specific schemes related with energy efficiency and those aimed at reducing a company’s environmental impact.

Energy and Water Agency CEO Manuel Sapiano focused on the importance of the work done by the Agency, in its close collaborations with the industry sector and explained that this is essential in the continuous work in policy making to aid industries.

During his address, MBB CEO Joe Tanti highlighted the importance of the messages concluded through this report as the interviews in the companies were conducted directly with both the technical experts and the managerial people.
