Launch of an Environmental Economic Report on Energy Issues for Industry and Business

On Friday 9th March 2018 a half day event was held at the Exchange Buildings in Valletta by the Malta Business Bureau (MBB) as part of the project Investing in Energy in collaboration with the Malta Chamber and the Energy and Water Agency, to launch an environmental-economic report on energy in business.

The report is an in-depth exploration of the current energy efficiency and renewable energy actions and opportunities for businesses in Malta. It highlights all the measures arising out of the energy audits undertaken by non-SMEs, and explores the financing and cost-benefit implications of these measures. The report also examines the national and EU legislative environment, and the implications of this on businesses in Malta. The MBB emphasised that the report is useful to businesses in planning their energy management, as well as to policy makers through the overview of business circumstances presented.

The report is based on a sample of energy audits carried out in compliance with the Energy Efficiency Directive. This directive requires non-SMEs to carry out energy audits once every four years, with the first audits having to be completed by December 2015.

The report was presented by Dr David Zahra, President of MBB and Mr Bernard Mallia, economist and author of the report, highlighting that enterprises were preparing to invest over €6 million in measures with majority investments being in photovoltaics albeit these having a less better payback period than other technologies such as RES water heating, LEDs or Insulation. MEP Miriam Dalli and Malta Chamber President Mr Frank V. Farrugia addressed the attendees.

Following these presentations, attendees participated in round-table discussions. The discussions focused on what can be done to facilitate improved energy performance for businesses in Malta, considering both technical as well as financial measures.

The Investing in Energy Project is run by the Malta Business Bureau in partnership with the Energy and Water Agency and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, with co-financing from the Regulator for Energy and Water Services and the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business.
